The process is based on sealing between the pig and the pipeline so that no medium can flow past the pig.

Driven by pressure energy, the pig passes through the pipeline system and displaces its contents. The required energy is provided by a liquid or gaseous propellant.

A constant pipe diameter is required along the entire route to be passed. There must be no obstructions or bottlenecks in the system that could block the pig. Smooth and offset-free pipe connections protect the pig and reduce wear.

The pig glides on a liquid film during its passage. Operation under dry conditions is not possible.
